Kolanut is a sacred component of traditional culture and is basically a symbol for life. Since inception, many uses has been developed on kolanut but our emphasis will be based on three points:

• Means of Food
• Medicinal Purpose
• Component of Divination

Firstly, Kolanut is an edible fruit and is used as a food source; it is a tradition in many part of Africa (yoruba race as a case study) that a kolanut can be presented to people of authority and guests, when they enter a person’s home, the kolanut will be broken to eat among friends. The same thing happen between two families that their children are willing to get married, during the introduction ceremony (“idana”). In some part of Nigeria, according to their ritual customs, it is the King, Chief or the Oldest person in the house who had the honor of breaking the kolanut and this give rise to the adage that says “It is the mouth of the elder the kolanut get ripped” – “Enu agba ni obi ngbo si” meaning: the elders has the authority to give judgment or command issues.

Secondly, Kolanut is a means of curative component; many diseases can be cured using kolanut as the active ingredients. Our temple (ancestral pride temple limited) has carried out extensive research in using kolanut to cure many diseases (like sexual impotence recently cured in our temple with the use of kolanut), some cures was also put into practical recently.

Kolanut can be used as a stimulant to help keep awake during late hours. It was also used as a tonic to increase overall health and prepared as a remedy for sexual impotence.

Lastly, our main focus is to teach the public how kolanut can be used as a means of divination/consultation on minor issues especially YES or NO questions. As an initiate of any orisa, courtesy demands that we should have idea/knowledge on how kolanut can be used on YES or NO questions. A priest or anyone who wish to use kolanut as means of divination will break the kolanut into four lobes, while holding it in his palm, he or she would ask a straight question and then cast the kolanut on the ground or tray depending, and interprets the geographical position of the combinations of the convex and concave sides of the kolanut, the convex side of the kolanut lobes indicate a positive response in divination while the concave sides indicate negativity.

For instance, a kolanut that is been broken into four lobes after casting, if two faces up and other two faces down, it indicates positivity or YES towards our question, but if the ration of ones facing down is higher 3:1 to the one facing up, it indicate NO and it is referred to as “Okaran” but vice versa (3 up & 1 down) is referred to as “Eta Iwa”. Eta Iwa indicates that the kolanut is gining us 70% YES to our question and 30% NO to the question, but in the situation where all the lobes are facing down, it is “Oyeku”, the answer is emphatically NO to our question but vice versa, the answer is emphatically YES, meaning peace “Alafia” to our question.

It is important for us to note that it takes a specific system of asking questions using Kolanut, our questions must be a Straight Forward Question (i.e. One way question e.g. Ifa, Should I embark on this journey? Don’t ask Ifa, Should I Go or Not). It is the kolanut that will now tell you YES or NO to your straight question.
